We left the
Pacific Pines RV Park where we are staying in Florence, OR. We drove north on
US 101 in our cars to the Heceta Head Lighthouse pullout. There we met Scott
the Docent.
Scott
impressed us with the hardship of being a lighthouse keeper in the days when
there were no roads to the area and they had to use the beaches at low tide to
get to Florence.
We walked up
to the lighthouse, passing the old keeper's house on the way (it is now a
B&B).
Scott told us
about the lighthouse and then took us to the top, 5 people at a time (only 50
steps-easy).
We could see the expensive facet lens
Returned to
US 101 and drove south only a short distance to a great view of the lighthouse
A further
short distance south and we came to the Sea Lions Caves where it is rumored
that there are Steller Sea Lions (none today). It is the largest sea cave in the
country and is worth seeing, but it would be better with sea lions.
Almost the
entire group ended up at Mo's in Florence for lunch.
